Henri Temianka was a virtuoso violinist, a conductor, an inspirational teacher, an author and a storyteller. He is also a son of Greenock having been born in the town on 19 November 1906.
110 years later, Henri is coming home in the form of a bronze portrait bust generously donated by his son Dr Daniel Temianka. The bust has been cast from a mould of a bust which sits at Chapman University in California.
Henri’s Greenock connection came to focus in the last few years when Viki McDonnell researched a book titled Greenock’s Jewish Community 1880-1940. Henri’s father was cantor of the synagogue which was held in the Shepherd’s Hall in Cathcart Street. Henri would later successfully arrange to have his mother and father freed from a concentration camp after they tried to flee Holland and were betrayed and arrested travelling to Spain during the second world war.
