Greenock street names

This book, published in 1907, was the first attempt to provide a comprehensive explanation of how the various street names of Greenock were acquired. Although Gardner Blair is, by his own admission, 'too prone to wander from my immediate subject', his digressions frequently throw light on a variety of subjects related to local history. Blair took as his sources all the then available printed books on the history of Greenock but he also made a point of incorporating oral traditions 'and so rescue from possible forgetfulness many interesting stories and legends'.

The origins of the publication lay in a series of articles written for the Greenock Herald by Gardner Blair which he subsequently edited, producing the volume published in 1907 by the Greenock Herald at three shillings.
