Ninian Hill - The Old West Kirk 1898
This history of the Old West Kirk was written by Ninian Hill in the late 1890s and printed by the well known Greenock firm of James McKelvie and Sons.
The illustrated volume contains many interesting stories about the kirk and also contains a detailed account of the important pre-Raphaelite stained glass windows that are a notable feature of the church.
The author, Ninian Hill (1861-1946), came from a long established local family and was a Greenock shipowner. He lived at 57 Union Street, Greenock and had his office in the Clyde Buildings at 19 West Blackhall Street, Greenock.
He was the owner of the saling ship Atalanta, a cargo vessel built by Robert Duncan of Port Glasgow. Just as he was completing the book news came that the ship had been lost off the coast of Oregon which resulted in the dedication of the publication to the crew of the vessel.
