There are many kinds of dermestes beetle these include carpet, larder and hide beetles. They are mostly found on floors near skirting boards and they tend to get into hard to reach places.

Dermestes beetles are usually 7mm - 10mm long; their colours can vary from black and white to uniform brown.

Inspect all kitchen and floor areas that are hard to clean (e.g. behind and underneath fridges, gaps between kitchen units and appliances, gaps between skirtings and floors).  These must be thoroughly cleaned before any treatment with insecticide is carried out.

Vacuum or sweep the floor at the centre of the room especially under furniture. It is essential that the floor is cleared of any items to allow this clean up.

Move all the furniture, at least 18 inches away from the walls. The floor near the wall should then be thoroughly cleaned/vacuumed. Empty the vacuum cleaner bag/cylinder following this clean up.

This applies to all rooms, not only the most affected room. The floor-wall junction around the edge of each room should be sprayed.

When buying insecticide read the label carefully to ensure that it will treat this type of pest.  Insecticide for “crawling insects” is suitable.  Try to find an insecticide that is “residual” meaning that the killing action will last a number of days after being applied.

A fine spray of insecticide should be applied to the area that you have cleaned, concentrating on gaps around the room.

When buying and using insecticides always:
Read the label carefully!
Follow the manufacturer's instructions!
Wash your hands thoroughly immediately after use!
