What age do I have to be to register to vote?

This varies depending on the election. For most, you must be at least 18 years of age on the day of the poll to be allowed to vote, however in some instances you will be able to vote if 16 years of age or older on the day of poll.

There will be a Notice of Election published for each election, which you can see on the Democracy and Elections section of our website (see related links), and this notice will make clear the age restrictions applying. The Local Electoral Registration Office, whose details are shown on this page, should also be able to assist.

If you have not yet reached the require minumum age, you may still be able to register, and provide you still reside at the same address on the when you reach that age you will then automatically be eligible for voting. Again, the Local Electoral Registration Office, whose details are shown on this page, should also be able to assist.
