Catchment Arrangements

Inverclyde Council provides both denominational and non-denominational education. Most parents/carers choose to send their children to the school of their chosen denomination in their catchment area.

For the purposes of determining which school a pupil should attend the authority is divided into defined catchment areas. Inverclyde's catchment areas are available to view as a download from this page or through the interactive mapping links on the 'My Inverclyde' section of Inverclyde Council's website.  Each home address has a catchment denominational and non-denominational school which pupils can attend. All the denominational schools in Inverclyde are Roman Catholic.

In Inverclyde, we ask that families choose the sector (either denominational or non-denominational) on entry to primary school and the assumption is, that having made this choice, pupils will remain in the same sector for the duration of their education in Inverclyde.

There are no denominational primary schools within the areas of Quarriers Village, Kilmacolm, Inverkip and Wemyss Bay.  Parents often choose to send there childrem to the local non-denominational primary school because of the travelling distance to their nearest denominational primary school.  In such circumstances the following admission arrangements apply.

  • Only those children who have a certicate of baptism into the Roman Catholic faith when registering for primary 1 will have the choice at primary 7 to seek admission to the denominational school assigned to their address.  For more information, please read our Pupil Placement Policy which is available in the documents section.

The catchment school for Gaelic Medium Primary Education is Whinhill Primary School.  The choice of Gaelic Primary Education is available to every child residing in Inverclyde.  This includes pupils who reside outwith the catchment area for Whinhill Primary School.

The council’s policy in respect of school transport will apply.
