Council leader urges employer to play fair by loyal workforce

Inverclyde’s Council Leader has urged DB Apparel to offer the maximum financial packages available to the ‘loyal and professional’ workforce at Playtex in Port Glasgow.

The move comes as the company confirms the factory in Port Glasgow will close in early 2016.

Inverclyde Council Leader, Councillor Stephen McCabe, said: “It is bitterly disappointing to receive the news confirming that the DB Apparel site at Port Glasgow is to close in early 2016.

“I have written to the company urging them to be mindful of the personal circumstances of staff and to make every effort to maximise the financial packages available to them.

“The loyal and professional staff have worked for the company for many years, some giving decades of service. It is important that they receive the maximum support available and are given every opportunity to be supported by the public partners in seeking alternative employment elsewhere.

“I would also send out a call to local employers to be on the lookout for staff from Playtex seeking new employment. The company, DB Apparel, have confirmed to me that the closure of the factory is in no way a reflection on the quality, dedication and professionalism of the Port Glasgow workforce.”
