Wasted project

Young people from across Inverclyde got a dose of good advice from experts on issues around substance misuse.
For, the ‘wasted’ project brought S2 pupils from Inverclyde secondary schools together in Port Glasgow Town Hall.
And, on hand were experts from the ‘healthier Inverclyde’ project, Police Scotland and Inverclyde Council’s youth work services.
Inverclyde Council’s Communities Vice-Convener, Councillor James McColgan, said: “The ‘wasted’ project is an opportunity for our young people to get access to good advice and information in a safe environment. All of the agencies working together to assist our young people to be better informed is absolutely vital to help them make the right life choices.”
Secondary School pupils participated in a full day event, held at Port Glasgow Town Hall, exploring the dangers related to substance misuse, including involvement in risky behaviours, violence and lowered sexual inhibitions.
Pupils were invited to view a short dr
ama which tells a realistic tale of how substance misuse can impact people’s lives. The drama delved into the lives of some young people at a party and follows as the night’s events unfold to leave them irrevocably affected by the decisions they made that night.
The pupils spent the remainder of the day discussing and exploring the issues highlighted within the drama in topic based workshops
Councillor McColgan, who is also the young people’s champion in the Council, added: “The workshops, delivered by youth work services, 'healthier Inverclyde' and Police Scotland, allowed pupils to express their views about some of the dangers faced by young people. This meant they can work through strategies to protect themselves from harm.”
