Inverclyde support for 999 day

Inverclyde councillors have agreed to support a new national event to commemorate and celebrate the emergency services.

Emergency Services Day

The 9th September (9/9) has been designated national ‘emergency services day’ or 999 day and the council’s education and communities committee agreed that the council will support the event and fly a specially designed flag above the council’s municipal buildings this weekend.

Convener Councillor Jim Clocherty said: “Our emergency services across the country and right here in Inverclyde do fantastic work.

“While it is good news for most of us that we don’t see that work day in day out, it sometimes means that their work can easily go unnoticed.

“The emergency services or 999 day is an ideal opportunity to support the services and to remember the bravery and commitment being carried out in our community, often in very difficult and dangerous circumstances to protect us and keep us safe.

“I am delighted to support emergency services day and would encourage many of our local organisations to join us in showing their support on the 9th September each year”

The council agreed to fly a flag which has been specially designed by the national organisers to link with the design of the existing armed forces day flag.

The flag will be flown this weekend and throughout Sunday the ninth of September above Inverclyde Council’s headquarters in Clyde Square, Greenock.

Inverclyde’s police and fire scrutiny convener, Councillor Tommy McVey, welcomed the decision. He said: “In Inverclyde we have recently seen first-hand the bravery of our emergency services in action. Just this year Police Scotland’s PC Laura Sayer and PC Kenny MacKenzie sustained injuries in the line of duty following an incident in Greenock.

“In August 2016, Andy Adams, watch manager with Scottish Fire and Rescue Services based in Greenock sustained life-changing injuries when a wall collapsed during firefighting operations in the town.”

While both of these incidents made national headlines, there are acts of bravery every day across Scotland that won’t be headlines.  The emergency services day is an ideal opportunity for all of us to take a step back and recognise that work.”
