£¼m to voluntary groups and sports clubs
VOLUNTARY groups and sports clubs across Inverclyde have been awarded almost £¼m to support the work they do in their communities.
Nearly 60 organisations have been awarded a share of just under £230,000 from two council funds.
The Grants to Voluntary Organisations (GTVO) scheme will see 36 groups receive one-off payments totalling just over £136,000 to support their work.
A further 19 sports clubs have been awarded almost £93,000 from a local authority fund for Under-19s teams.
The grants will benefit everything from football, bowls and netball sides to community transport groups, scouts companies and arts projects.
Councillor Graeme Brooks, who chairs Inverclyde Council’s grants sub-committee, said: “Our wide range of sports clubs and voluntary organisations do a terrific job engaging with people of all ages in communities across Inverclyde and it’s important that we support that first-class work.
“Many of these groups have been hit hard by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic and I hope these grants will go some way to helping them weather the storm while the money will allow others to continue to flourish.”
It is expected that there will be another round of funding next year.
Details of how to apply will be announced in due course.
Councillor Jim Clocherty, Inverclyde Council depute leader and convener of education and communities, said: “I’m delighted to see such a wide variety of groups benefiting from the latest round of funding from both schemes.
“These organisations reach out to people – young and older – in every corner of Inverclyde and that support for our residents is much needed and much valued now more than ever.”
