Greenock Town Centre revamp moves forward
Inverclyde Council will be carrying out investigations along Greenock’s West Blackhall Street this week as part of the next stage of the redevelopment of the town’s traditional high street.
While the project is still in the design phase, the exploratory works are a key part of that and will help with developing final plans to allow construction to take place.
The investigations, which start today (Monday 8 March), are expected to last a week and will involve some road and pavement excavations to assess ground conditions, foundations, underground services and other critical elements.
West Blackhall Street will remain open with appropriate traffic management and some parking restrictions at certain locations in place to facilitate the works.
Councillor Michael McCormick, Inverclyde Council’s convener of environment and regeneration, said: “The start of exploratory works is an integral part of the design process and a positive next step in this important regeneration project.
“Every effort has been made to minimise disruption and I’d like to thank people in advance for their patience and understanding while these works take place.”
The makeover of West Blackhall Street is aimed at making it more attractive to visitors, shoppers and diners.
The council, SPT and Sustrans, the walking and cycling charity, are all contributing towards the improvement works.
The project is also designed to ‘future proof’ the area so that it will be compatible with more sustainable forms of transport and zero-carbon targets.
