Storm Eowyn Red weather warning safety message
SCHOOLS and public buildings across Inverclyde are closed today, Friday 24 January 2025, in response to the red weather warning covering large parts of the country due to Storm Eowyn.
All primaries, secondaries, additional support needs (ASN) schools, and all early years centres are closed.
Greenock Municipal Buildings and other council buildings are also shut due to the extreme weather warning, as well as the Inverclyde Health and Social Care (HSCP) headquarters at Hector McNeil House and HSCP office at Princes Street House, Port Glasgow.
Other closures include all Inverclyde Leisure facilities, community centres, recycling centres, libraries and the Watt Institution, incorporating the McLean Museum & Art Gallery, Watt Library, and Watt Hall.
There will also be no burials or cremations and there will be no bin collections with residents urged not to leave out their bins for collection.
Information about alternative arrangements will be announced in due course.

The Met Office red weather warning for wind is in force from 10am until 5pm on Friday 24 January 2025 and there is also an amber weather warning in place for strong winds running from 6am until 9pm.
Councillor Robert Moran, leader of Inverclyde Council, said: “The fact that the council/HSCP and our partners are having to take these extreme steps of closing schools, buildings, facilities, and moving to essential services only highlights the severity of the situation.
“With that in mind, I urge residents and businesses to heed the warnings and do not travel and stay safe.”
Louise Long MBE, chief executive of Inverclyde Council, said: “This is an unprecedented red weather warning for extreme winds which means there is a serious risk to life, damage to property, and power cuts, among many other things.
“The advice is do not travel in, or to, affected areas, including Inverclyde.
“As a result, we have taken the decision to move to essential services only and most public buildings are closed.”
The latest Inverclyde Council and HSCP service updates will be available on the council website at www.inverclyde.gov.uk/stormeowyn and on the council’s social media channels.
