COUNCIL leader Stephen McCabe has praised Scottish Chambers of Commerce boss Dr Liz Cameron CBE who is stepping down as the organisation’s chief executive after more than two decades.

Dr Cameron, who lives in Gourock, announced today, Thursday 4 September 2025, that she is leaving Scotland’s largest business network after 21 years at the helm.

As well as being a respected and influential voice for Scottish business, Dr Cameron has been a big supporter of Inverclyde given her local ties.

Dr Cameron has also been part of the Inverclyde Socio-Economic Task Force, was chieftain of the Gourock Highland Games in 2023, and is a member of the Inverclyde Leisure board of directors.

Councillor McCabe said: “I’ve been fortunate to work closely with Liz over the years and particularly in recent times through the Inverclyde Socio-Economic Task Force.

“Her knowledge and experience of Scottish and international business is second to none and has been hugely beneficial to the task force.

“Liz is not only a fantastic ambassador for Scotland but a first-class champion for Inverclyde and we saw a glimpse of that when she was chieftain of the Gourock Highland Games in 2023.

“I’d like to congratulate Liz on a remarkable career leading and transforming the Scottish Chambers of Commerce and being a leading light for businesses and communities in Scotland.

“I wish Liz all the very best with whatever lies next.”

Dr Cameron was awarded a CBE in the 2022 Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for services to the promotion of Scotland and UK International Trade.

It followed on from an OBE awarded in 2013 for services to business and commerce.

Dr Cameron has an extensive CV and many successes representing the world of business at Scottish, UK and international levels and is credited with spearheading new public-private partnerships supporting some 900 new small and medium sized enterprises, helping them increase turnover by up to £25 million and creating over 300 jobs.

At a local level, Dr Cameron is a member of the Inverclyde Socio-Economic Task Force set up by the council in partnership with the UK and Scottish governments to help explore and deliver investment opportunities in Inverclyde to boost the economy and generate employment opportunities.
