Team effort for council apprentices

MORE than 30 Inverclyde Council modern apprentices continued their learning by taking part in a group team building day.

It was a team effort for 32 trainees who completed a series of tasks during an event at Finlaystone Country Estate.

The apprentices are studying a wide range of roles, including horticulture, roads maintenance, business administration, stores, sports coaching and building standards.

The council is also currently recruiting for two modern apprentice joiners with applications being accepted until Sunday 14 September 2025.

The get-together at Finlaystone has become an annual event to bring together trainees who work across a range of council services to further develop their team building skills and share experiences of their apprenticeship.

In recent months, council apprentices have also been out volunteering in the community helping out at local charities including CVS Inverclyde, Parklea Branching Out and Inverclyde Foodbank.

Councillor Michael McCormick, Inverclyde Council’s convener of environment and regeneration, said: “The council’s apprenticeship scheme is well-established and has been hugely successful in supporting young people into the world of work.

“They are able to work towards recognised qualifications in their chosen field while receiving excellent on the job experience, training and support from knowledgeable staff – and they get paid as well.

“Whether the apprentices continue working for the council upon completion of their course or move into employment or further training elsewhere, it’s a terrific stepping stone for them to achieve their career goals.

“We, as a council, recognise the importance of providing opportunities for our young people and as Inverclyde’s biggest employer, I’m proud that we lead by example in supporting the new workforce in this way.”

Inverclyde Council works with a number of colleges and external partners on its modern apprenticeship programme.

It is open to Inverclyde residents only and although the focus is on providing opportunities for those aged 16-24 years, some positions are provided for those aged 25 plus.

The joiner modern apprenticeship job advert, further information about the roles, and an online application form are available now on the MyJobScotland website at on: myjobscotland.gov.uk/councils/inverclyde-council/jobs or directly via the link in the Other Websites section of this page.

Closing date for applications is Sunday 14 September 2025.
