How do I vote?

You can cast your vote in a number of ways:

At Your Polling Station

Shortly before polling day you will receive a Poll Card which will contain your own unique electoral register reference number and tell you where you should go to vote. The polling station will be open from 7am - 10pm.

Please note that Photo ID is now requried at certain elections for for voters wishing to vote at a polling station. See the further information the Electoral Commission website page shown in the Other Websites section of this page. Please ensure you select "Scotland" as your location to make sure you get the correct information.

By Post

You do not have to visit your polling station to vote. If you prefer you can arrange to vote by post. You can apply for a postal vote for a particular election, for a set period of time or for a permanent postal vote. You will finds details on how to apply to vote by post by on the Renfrewshire Valuation Joint Board website shown in the Other Websites seciton of this page.

If you are unable to vote in person, in certain circumstances you may be able to appoint a proxy to vote for you. That means that someone else votes on your behalf, however you have to provide a reason for needing a proxy vote. For example, maybe you can't get to the polling station on election day because:

  • You are going to be away on holiday
  • You have a physical condition that prevents you from getting to the polling place
  • The kind of work you do means you can't get to the polling place
  • You are living overseas

You can apply to vote by proxy for a particular election, for a set period of time or for all future elections. Anyone can be your proxy as long as they are eligible to vote in the election and they are willing to vote on your behalf.

If you wish to appoint a proxy, please call the Local Electoral Registration Office on the details shown in the Contacts Section of this page for advice.
