The former police office has lain empty for decades but is set to be transformed into modern office accommodation as part of a £2.7 million refurbishment by Inverclyde Council.

The slip road next to the Municipal Buildings leading from Dalrymple Street to Wallace Place will be closed for the duration of the work which is expected to last nearly a year.

Environment & Regeneration Convener Councillor Michael McCormick said: “This is a much-needed project that will restore a neglected part of the magnificent Municipal Buildings and provide new, modern office accommodation. For safety reasons it will involve closing the slip road to Wallace Place to cars and pedestrians although visitors will still be able to get into the Fire Museum. Anyone wanting to walk into the town centre will have to go along William Street and through Clyde Square which I appreciate is inconvenient but unfortunately there are no other options open to us to allow the work to go ahead safely.”

Inverclyde Council is also developing plans to refurbish the former James Watt College nearby which until recently had been used as education headquarters. This project will not affect the slip road closure and pedestrians will still be able to walk along William Street to Clyde Square.
