Bye to the bells

The Drumfrochar Square flats, which have stood at the 'Heid O’the Hill' in the Broomhill area for over 40 years, are due for demolition in the coming months.  In celebration of the iconic 'Bell Towers' River Clyde Homes and Rig Arts are holding a party in the Square.

This interactive event on Sunday 3 April from 6 – 9pm will include an art exhibition with music, video projections and artwork by local artists and Broomhill residents.   Children will be invited to paint their own mini commemorative bell and have a go playing the drums.  'Wummin Drummin' will be on hand for musical entertainment as well as a DJ.

When darkness falls, the building will be used as backdrop for projecting images of days gone by and local children’s art onto the walls.

Jenny Speck, Chairperson of the Broomhill Tenants and Residents Association said, “This is an excellent event to celebrate the square and bring the local community together.  Everyone is welcome to join us for our “Bye to the Bells”. The community are looking forward to seeing the changes to the area in coming months.”

Rig Arts spokesperson said "'Bye to the Bells' is a chance for residents to not only celebrate, but commemorate the iconic 'Bell Tower' flats. Memories will be shared through interactive art and sound installations that showcase the area's rich history and community spirit. Everyone is invited to come along and be part of it."

The flats are scheduled for demolition in May 2016 as part of the ongoing regeneration of the Broomhill area.

Katrina Anderson, board member of River Clyde Homes said “I am delighted to see the progress of the works in the Broomhill area, the work on the multi storey flats is really taking shape.  This event is a great opportunity to celebrate the history of the area and look to the future.”
