Support for Task Force
The Prime Minister’s representative in Scotland has offered the Government’s support in the Inverclyde task force working to safeguard jobs at Texas Instruments in Greenock.
Inverclyde Council Leader and Chair of the Texas Instruments Task Force, Councillor Stephen McCabe, said: “I spoke with David Mundell, the Secretary of State for Scotland, last week and was delighted that he offered the support of the UK Government. He’s now confirmed that the UK Government will help in any way it can.
“It is with this spirit of co-operation and focus on a positive outcome that we can succeed in safeguarding Texas Instruments plant as a going concern for the Scottish and Inverclyde economy.
“The secretary of state highlighted that he has been in touch with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and UK Trade and Investment. These national agencies will be in touch with their opposite numbers in the Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise to provide complimentary support at a UK level to the endeavour before us. This link is crucial because this industry is a global one and the opportunity to engage with the UKs main institutional and state investors is invaluable.
“Working hand-in-hand with our colleagues at the Scottish Government and with the UK Government in full support, the task force has a real opportunity to engage with the right people on an international stage to support the workers here in Greenock.”
The Texas Instruments Task Force was set up after the company announced the closure of the Greenock plant with the loss of 365 jobs. The company said that the closure would be phased over three years.
The first meeting, chaired by Inverclyde Council Leader, Councillor Stephen McCabe was held on Monday 1 February. Scottish Government Business Minister, Fergus Ewing MSP, attended the first meeting and was joined by representatives from the Scottish Government; Scottish Enterprise; The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP); Skills Development Scotland and regional and national politicians.
