Task Force Meeting.

The Leader of Inverclyde Council has invited representatives of the Government and public agencies as well as local political leaders to the first meeting of the Texas Instruments task force.

The first meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday 1 February.

The task force has been set up by Inverclyde Council following yesterday’s announcement the Greenock factory is to be closed with the loss of 365 jobs.

Councillor McCabe said: “These are highly skilled and motivated workers who have served the company well for many years. It is vital that we bring together anyone who can help in preserving the plant and protecting a vital part of the Inverclyde and wider Scottish economy.

“The company has announced that there will be a phased closure of the factory over three years.  The clock is now ticking on this closure and there isn’t a moment to lose in getting the relevant organisations involved in the task.

“Within a month of setting up the Ferguson’s task force we had found a new buyer, re-hired the workforce and put in place plans to expand the business. Today the yard has orders worth £100 million on its books and thanks to the foresight and financial commitment of Jim McColl the future of shipbuilding on the Clyde is looking bright.

“I am confident that with all agencies working together, we can do it again for Texas Instruments given the history of the factory and the skill and dedication of the workforce. I am looking forward to discussing the way forward with members of the task force.”

The Greenock factory has been producing silicon wafers for the electronics industry for over 40 years – originally as National Semiconductors.

Yesterday (27 January 2016) Texas Instruments announced it planned to move production to sites in Germany, Japan and the United States over the next three years.
