A Celebration of Books and Reading

Inverclyde’s Viking heritage, the Greenock Blitz and a family discovery day are just some of the events lined up to mark Book Week Scotland.

Held every November, it is an opportunity for people of all ages and walks of life to come together to share and enjoy books and reading.

All of the events are free and are being hosted by Inverclyde Council’s libraries.

Education & Communities Convener Councillor Terry Loughran said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for people to take part in the national event while celebrating the rich cultural, historical and literary heritage we enjoy in Inverclyde. I am delighted we have managed to put together such a varied and interesting range of events during the week and I am sure there is something for everyone to get involved with.”

Philippa Cochrane, Head of Reader Development at Scottish Book Trust, said: “It’s a fantastically positive endorsement of Scotland’s thriving literary scene that Book Week Scotland is now entering its fifth year, bigger, better and bolder than ever before. Libraries, authors, booksellers, readers and partners too numerous to mention have really taken this national initiative to heart and made it what it is – a joyful, democratic and inclusive celebration of reading’s unique capacity for empowerment, enrichment, education, solace, pleasure and growth. The 2016 programme is our best yet and as always Inverclyde Libraries have pulled together an interesting and diverse programme of events to encourage people to take part all over the authority.”

From Monday 21 November to Saturday 26 November people of all ages and walks of life will come together in libraries, schools, community venues and workplaces to share and enjoy books and reading. They will be joined in this celebration by Scotland’s authors, poets, playwrights, storytellers and illustrators to bring a packed programme of events and projects to life.

A wide range of free events are being held at all Inverclyde Council’s Libraries. They include Discover Local Writers sessions with authors Rosemary and Victoria Gemmell, Dave Watson and Vincent Gillen; how Norse place-names in Inverclyde can give fresh insights into local history and a Family Discovery Day with children’s author Alison Murray.
