New year brings £2.8m investment to Greenock
Scottish Water is about to begin work on a £2.8m investment project which will improve its waste water infrastructure and tackle flooding in Greenock town centre.
The first phase of work in this investment will start on 12th January. Forty-seven metres of pipework will be installed to upgrade the existing sewer network, improve the water flow, and reduce the risk of flooding in the Oak Mall Shopping Centre and surrounding areas. The work will be carried out by Scottish Water’s alliance partner Amey Black & Veatch.
Speaking about the project Scottish Water Corporate Affairs Regional Manager, Ruaridh MacGregor, said:
“We’re delighted to be starting this vital piece of work to alleviate flooding in and around one of Inverclyde’s key shopping destinations. The project will benefit retailers and shoppers alike and will help minimise the risk of disruption in the future. Whether in a domestic or business setting, we’re acutely aware of the inconvenience that flooding causes and we welcome the benefits that this work will bring to Greenock town centre.”
Drivers are advised of a temporary closure of the Bullring Car Park from Friday 12th January 2018 until the end of March 2018. The car park will be closed for around ten weeks to allow the first phase of work to be completed. The footpath will remain open and alternative parking can be found on Cathcart Street East, Station Avenue East, Station Avenue West, and Dalrymple Street.
A temporary road closure is also necessary on Sunday 14th January, from 4am – 8am, for the delivery of specialist machinery to site. Diversions will be in place during this time. We have been working with Transport Scotland to implement this road closure at a time that will cause minimal disruption to road users.
Scottish Water thanks affected road users in advance for their patience and understanding.
Councillor Michael McCormick, Inverclyde Council’s Environment and Regeneration Convener, said:
“This work by Scottish Water is very welcome news. This investment to improve the infrastructure will help to tackle the ongoing issues which have been faced by the Oak Mall and reduce the risk of flooding. While the work is ongoing, there will inevitably be some short term disruption, particularly around the bullring car park. During this time we would encourage drivers and visitors to follow the signs, be patient and access the wide range of other parking, most of it free, available in Greenock town centre.”
Scottish Water is planning the second phase of the project and will confirm the details of this in due course.
