Factory demolition underway
Demolition is underway of a business property on the A8 in Greenock which caused major transport disruption this week.
For, Inverclyde Council’s building control service is managing the demolition of the factory and the aim is to have the work completed quickly to allow the remainder of the A8 road closure to be removed.
The work started today and is expected to be completed over the weekend.
During this time Scotland Transerve and Police Scotland will continue to enforce a contraflow on the A8 in Greenock.
Councillor Stephen McCabe, Leader of Inverclyde Council said: “The fire at McKechnie Jess is a blow to the business themselves from which they have the full support of Inverclyde Council to help them get back in business as quickly as possible.
“The fire itself and the work to make the site safe has caused a great deal of disruption to the travelling public. Our building control service has been involved since the early morning on the day of the fire. Now that the urgent firefighting role has been reduced, we are now able to proceed with the full demolition of the buildings at the site. When completed, this will allow the current contraflow to be lifted quickly.
“Various services of the Council have been involved in supporting the company, Transport Scotland and the emergency services this week. I would like to send my thanks to them and to drivers and businesses who have been patient while the trunk road has been closed and diverted.
“As soon as the demolition is complete and it is safe to do so, the aim would be to liaise with the road operator, Scotland Transerve and Police Scotland to have the A8 road fully re-opened as quickly as possible.”
