For, Councillor Elizabeth Roberston, Inverclyde Council’s healthy lifestyles champion and Councillor Stephen McCabe, the welfare and financial inclusion champion are making the call during ‘financial capability week’.

And they’ve revealed that nearly 10,000 adults in Inverclyde are estimated to be over-indebted.

Councillor Robertston said: “Financial health is part of our physical, social, emotional and mental wellbeing.  Being in debt can limit people’s choices for themselves and their family. National focus weeks like financial capability week give us all a chance to examine what we each can do to make changes.

“The money advice service estimate that 9,527 adults in Inverclyde are over-indebted and that 40 per cent of people don’t feel in control of their finances.  Yet for many people getting that control back is just a free phone call away.

Councillor McCabe said: “Inverclyde has a strong partnership approach to providing support and advice to people with financial issues. There are a range of support services out there including advice services.  I would urge anyone looking to get their head above water with their finances to pick up the phone and speak to the service. It is free, impartial and confidential.  The worst you will be is better informed about your options and that is a better place than being worried by debt.”
