Record Year for Council Tax Collection

Inverclyde Council has seen a record year for the collection of council tax.

The Policy & Resources Committee has been told despite another challenging year the in-year collection level increased to 95.3% - its highest ever.

Council Tax Payment Card

Convener and Council Leader Councillor Stephen McCabe said: “Council tax helps to pay for so many of our vital services from schools and libraries to roads and refuse collection.

“That is why it is so important people pay what they owe in the first place and that we collect all that we possibly can from what is billed every year.

“There are a variety of ways to pay – not least by direct debit – and every penny goes directly to maintaining the high quality services we all expect and rely upon.”

Payment by direct debit has continued to rise with 76% income being received by this method.

The Council’s Debt Recovery team has also achieved significant success - by the end of March Inverclyde Council had collected 96.4% of all council tax billed since 993.

Councillor McCabe added: “We appreciate many people face money problems and struggle on a daily basis to make ends meet. We will always work with them to arrange a suitable payment plan before we take any kind of debt recovery action. People should make full use of the easy payment methods for paying their Council Tax to help them manage their money and avoid getting into debt.”

In addition to direct debit, Council Tax can be paid online through the Inverclyde Council website, by barcoded bill or payment card at paypoint sites in Post Offices or at the Council’s Customer Service Centre and by phone to the automated payment line on 0845 309 6062 (24 hours) or 01475 712590 (office hours)
