£30,000 Sinclair Street anti-flooding and pavement works
A ROAD in the east end of Greenock is set for a £30,000 major programme of works to reduce flooding and improve pedestrian safety.
The section of Sinclair Street underneath the railway bridge will be upgraded from Monday next week. (June 29)
Carriageway reconstruction and drainage work will be carried out and a new pavement built to improve safety for both drivers and pedestrians.
To allow for the improvements, a small stretch of Sinclair Street, from the junction with Carwood Street, will shut on Monday with the project expected to last six weeks.
Diversions will be in place for motorists and pedestrians.
Councillor Michael McCormick, Convener of Environment & Regeneration, said: “The problems with the section of road underneath the Sinclair Street railway bridge, particularly the lack of a dedicated pedestrian footpath, have been an issue for some time.
“The council has listened to concerns from residents, the wider public and football fans, who use the passageway to attend games at Cappielow, and is taking action.
“The carriageway reconstruction will also improve the drainage system at this part of the road.
“Unfortunately, the nature and extent of the works means there will be disruption for drivers and pedestrians who use Sinclair Street.
“I’d like to thank those affected in advance for their patience and understanding. I hope the prospect of improved safety for pedestrians and road users will make the short term disruption worth it in the long run.”
The project is being led by Inverclyde Council and has gained funding through the national Cycle Walking Safer Streets scheme.
Diversions will be in place along the A8 East Hamilton Street, Ratho Street, Carwood Street and will be clearly signposted for drivers and pedestrians.
