Safe Streets Save Lives

Inverclyde Council is launching the #SafeStreetsSaveLives campaign to encourage residents to put forward ideas to increase cycling and walking across the area.

The local authority has teamed up with Sustrans Scotland to create a new online website where residents and visitors can include information about specific locations.

The website allows anyone to highlight a location and set out any issues or suggestions about how this can be improved for cycling and walking, particularly to support physical distancing measures.

This can include a range of temporary measures such as reducing through traffic on certain roads, adding extra cycle facilities and removing street ‘clutter’ like pedestrian guard rails.

Inverclyde Council environment and regeneration convener, Councillor Michael McCormick, said: “Everyone has had to learn a new version of normal when out and about for exercise.  Physical distancing in some places can be easy but many of our public places were never designed to maintain a distance of two metres. While the physical distancing measures are in place it is important that we are all supported to maintain that essential distance to protect ourselves and protect others from the coronavirus.

“That’s why it is important that residents take the time to let us know about locations and issues. These can then be reviewed by our roads team and, if there is an opportunity to bid for national funds, we can try to address the issues raised.
