Back to school for nearly 50 new teachers

ALMOST 50 adults are heading back to school in classrooms across Inverclyde after the council welcomed this year’s intake of newly-qualified teachers.

A total of 48 new-starts will begin their education careers when pupils return after the summer holidays on Wednesday (18 August 2021).

It is one of the biggest intakes of newly-qualified teachers (NQTs) on record locally with 24 each across Inverclyde Council’s primaries and secondaries.

The number of NQTs starting in high schools is the highest in five years.

In primaries, more than a third of the new-starts are male – seven out of 24 – as more men increasingly opt for a career in the classroom.

The NQTs were given a warm welcome at their induction at Inverclyde Academy, including by Provost Martin Brennan, a former teacher himself.

Provost Brennan, who is also Inverclyde Council’s vice-convener of education, said: “While all our pupils will be excited and maybe even nervous about joining or returning to school, spare a thought for the group of adults here who will be exactly the same as they start their teaching careers.

“They have all worked tremendously hard and made lots of sacrifices to get to this stage and it’s been no mean feat doing so during a global pandemic.

“This is a huge moment for our NQTs and I wish them continued success and happiness as they begin an exciting new chapter of their lives as teachers in arguably the best facilities in the country.

“It’s also great to see so many people, including many local people, gaining employment opportunities, which is exactly what we want to see as part of our Inverclyde Works campaign to create and promote job opportunities.”

Having recently qualified, the NQTs will now begin a year-long probation at schools across the district.

Staff will head to the classroom on Monday (16 August) for two in-service days before pupils start the new term on Wednesday (18 August 2021).
