Twinverclyde – 15 sets of twins starting school

PUPILS in Inverclyde are doubly excited for the new term with 15 sets of twins starting primary one next week.

The area, which has become known as ‘Twinverclyde’ for its high twin count over the years, is preparing for when schools go back on Wednesday 18 August with the second highest number of similar siblings on record about to begin P1.

They met at St Mary's Primary in Greenock, which is Inverclyde Council’s latest new or refurbished school as part of the local authority’s £270 million schools estate programme to renew or refurbish every primary, secondary and nursery across the district.

Provost Martin Brennan, who is also Inverclyde Council’s vice-convener of education, said: “As a former teacher myself, the return to school is always an exciting time for pupils, parents and staff but it’s taken on greater significance this year following the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic over the last 18 months.

“While many of the safety rules will remain in place in schools for the time being, it’s just great to be celebrating the return to the classroom, including here at St Mary’s Primary in Greenock which is the latest new or refurbished school completed as part of our £270 million schools estate transformation.

“I wish all the children – and of course our education staff – all the very best for the start of the new term next week.”

The record twin count for Inverclyde was in 2015 when 19 sets started P1.

St Mary’s Primary in Greenock reopened in October 2020 following an extensive £6m refurbishment and extension of the school, which originally opened in 1909.
