Tennis club served £10k council grant

TENNIS players in Inverclyde are set to benefit from improved facilities after a local club netted a £10,000 grant.

The council’s education and communities committee gave the green light to serve up the five-figure sum to Fort Matilda Tennis Club in Greenock.

The ace amount will be used to replace the outdoor playing courts as part of the club’s overall refurbishment programme.

Councillor Jim Clocherty, Inverclyde Council’s education and communities convener, said: “We have a diverse sports offering in Inverclyde, including tennis, and we want to see that continue to flourish.

“Alongside the wider refurbishment of Fort Matilda Tennis Club, the grant towards court improvements will benefit local players and hopefully encourage more people from across the district to pick up a racquet and enjoy the benefits the sport has to offer.”

A similar award was made to Ardgowan Tennis Club, also based in Greenock, late last year.

Councillors approved the Fort Matilda funding at a meeting on Tuesday (9 March).
