Nursery kids agree top up tap at Kilmacolm Library a 'novel' idea
Children from Kilmacolm Nursery in Inverclyde recently quenched their thirst for learning at a Scottish Water Top Up Tap located just outside the village’s library.
At an event held last week to celebrate the tap, the eager learners were told about the importance of hydration and topping up from the tap with a refillable water bottle.
Laura Boyce, Communications and Engagement Team Lead at Scottish Water, said: “It’s clear to see that reading is thirsty work.
“We’ve had a fantastic morning at the library with the children; they’re all so enthusiastic about the tap, they’ve had a lot of fun using it themselves.
“It’s been great to chat to them about the health benefits of drinking tap water, and how we can all save money and help our planet by using our refillable water bottles to reduce single-use plastic waste.”
Laura added: “We’re certain the Kilmacolm Top Up Tap will continue to be popular with the local community, library-goers and visitors alike; the good news is that it’s already saved the equivalent of 3,627 plastic bottles from ending up in landfill.”
Situated on Bridge of Weir Road, the big, blue, shiny tap occupies a central spot in the heart of the community.
It forms part of a national network of more than 130 Scottish Water Top Up Taps across the country.
Councillor Jim Clocherty, Inverclyde Council’s convener of education and communities, said: “We’re pleased to support and promote the new top-up tap through our libraries service.
“Their ‘green team’ are working on reducing the carbon footprint of libraries in line with the council’s net zero strategy.
“I’m sure the Top Up Tap will be very much appreciated by people visiting the library, as well as residents and visitors of Kilmacolm.”
Scottish Water’s Your Water Your Life campaign began in 2018, installing public taps across Scotland. The campaign encourages people to make tap water their first choice and encourages everyone to make a refillable bottle a necessity and not leave home without it.
