Provost Drew McKenzie said: “It spoke volumes of Pope Francis that despite his ailing health and undoubted suffering, he was determined to celebrate Easter directly with people just hours before his sad passing.

“Throughout his papacy, he was an ambassador for the poor and those who faced injustice, which will resonate with the local community, and was a champion of peace and reconciliation.

“I know his death will be keenly felt around the world, including by the 26,000-plus Catholic community in Inverclyde.

“On behalf of the people of Inverclyde, my condolences to the Catholic community following the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis.”
