Twins at the double again in Twinverclyde

TWINS are at the double for the fifth year in a row in ‘Twinverclyde’.

A total of 10 sets of ‘similar siblings’ are due to begin P1 in Inverclyde when the schools go back on Tuesday 19 August 2025.

There were also 10 sets in 2024.

Incredibly, the twin count has now hit double figures in each of the last five years.

There has also been at least 10 sets in 11 of the last 13 years.

Inverclyde has become known as ‘Twinverclyde’ for its rate of twins.

Six pairs from the class of 2025 gathered at St Ninian’s Primary in Gourock where they were welcomed by Provost of Inverclyde, Drew McKenzie.

Provost McKenzie said: “The excitement is building in households across Inverclyde for the start of the new term next week but it’s doubly exciting for these families as they prepare to send off two children to primary one.

“It has become an annual tradition to get our new P1 twins together to celebrate the start of term here in ‘twinverclyde’, as we’re affectionately known as at this time of year.

“It's a bit of fun for all involved and a unique opportunity for parents to take part in a dress rehearsal before the big day on Tuesday.

“We also have the chance to showcase the wonderful teaching facilities we have and extend a warm Inverclyde welcome to everyone here today.

“Whether families are preparing for their children to start school, move into high school, or continuing with their primary or secondary education, it’s an exciting time for everyone and I wish all our pupils, their families and our education staff all the very best for the 2025/25 term.”

Two sets of this year’s twins will start primary one at St Ninian’s Primary.

St John’s Primary in Port Glasgow will also welcome two pairs of similar siblings for the new term.

The class of 2025 will take the Inverclyde twin count to 167 sets since 2013, which is an average of 13 sets each year.

Staff will head to the classroom for in-service days on Friday 15 and Monday 18 August 2025 before pupils begin the new term on Tuesday 19 August 2025.
