Council Tax Reduction
Council Tax Reduction is a means tested entitlement available to people who are responsible for paying council tax. You can apply for Council Tax Reduction if you rent or own your home or live rent free.
The amount of Council Tax Reduction you receive depends on the following:
The amount of money coming into your household
The amount of any savings you (and your partner) have. If your savings and investments are over £16,000 you will not be entitled to Council Tax Reduction.
Your personal circumstances and the income of the people who live with you.
The amount of your Council Tax bill
The Council Tax Reduction awarded to you is to help with the cost of your Council Tax, not any other living costs, but if you do pay rent you may also be entitled to Housing Benefit.
The maximum Council Tax Reduction that can be awarded is 100% of your Council Tax charge but water and sewerage costs are not included in this; you will be liable to pay these yourself.
On the 1st April 2017 the Scottish Government changed the way Council Tax for properties in Bands E – H was calculated. The change meant people living in these properties became liable to pay more Council Tax. If you are on a low income you may be entitled to receive help with these extra charges, even if you didn’t qualify before. Single person households with net income of up to £321 per week and all other households with net income of up to £479 per week are eligible to apply for a full exemption from the increased charge through the Council Tax Reduction Low Income Household Exemption scheme. An indication of how much your bill could be reduced by can be found within the Documents section of this page, see document “Low Income Household Exemption”.
